Halloween!

“Imagination is our strongest tool. It is what separates us from all the other animals.” The words of Lilley my yoga teacher this week. She did a brilliant job of weaving the theme of Halloween into our class and it got me thinking about my relationship with Halloween. When I was a little girl Halloween was a magical and thrilling time. Then I hit adult hood and some years it passed without me even noticing. But now I have a little girl of my own so it’s time to recapture the magic and get the imagination working again. Halloween is back! Well …..not this year…….I’m not organised enough but definitely next year! But it’s coming back “old school”. Remember when everyone used to make their own costumes? Halloween is a time for imagination and creation so I am going to try my hardest not to depend on outfits bought off the rail from Tesco for Nell. Why? Because some of my happiest memories as a child were of making my Halloween costumes with my mum. I remember one year in particular, I must have been eight years old and I went as Cinderella but not beautiful “I’m off to the ball” Cinderella but Cinders. I loved how my mum and I worked together as a team to make something. Running around the house finding things to enhance my transformation. Getting to play with my mums make up and clothes. Sewing, sticking, ripping, creating, together. I want Nell to have those kind of memories. So Gran, Oma and especially Auntie Zoe (prop maker at the Royal Opera House) I might need some help! After all we have a reputation to up hold – I won first prize as Cinders.

So maybe we can use Halloween to let our children’s imagination run wild and help them be proud of what they can achieve with some material and their imagination. Also, taking the opportunity to teach them some basic skills like sewing. But most importantly of all teaching our children to be Creators and not Consumers.
Happy Halloween Everyone!

Namaste!

Lots of love,
