What If…

Scooping up Nell, I run. I run as fast as I possibly can. Dodging whatever gets in my way. Determined and strong in the knowledge that I have done everything in my power to save us both.

Thankfully, the paragraph above is a figment of my imagination. A sleep deprived thought I had a few years ago, as I sung my daughter to sleep at 3am in the morning. But that thought became my motivation to become a healthier, stronger version of myself. What if, one day, I did have to pick Nell up and run from a danger that was heading our way? Could I do it?

Dark, I know. But the responsibility of becoming a mother sent me down that path of thinking and I decided to turn that darkness into hard-core motivation. My body’s strength and resilience had to match my mind’s unwavering belief I could out-run anything with my little girl in my arms.

That’s why for the past few years my health and my family's health have been a massive focus for me.

Funnily enough, over the last couple of weeks I have found this darkness creeping into my brain again. However, this time the question is different. “Could we fight off a global outbreak of a virus that they say could be deadly?" And of course my response is a resounding “Hell yes!”

I’m taking this opportunity to revisit the health choices in our house because if a potential outbreak comes knocking at our door, I’m going to do my darnest to make sure my family and I are strong enough to put up with a visit from Mr Corona.

It is fine for our Prime Minister to say “wash your hands and carry on" but I believe there is so much more we can do to get ready for the possible race that’s around the hypothetical corner.

So in the Colenso household there will be the usual prescription of cold showers, lots of good sleep, vitamins, nutritious food, fresh air, yoga, relaxing baths and nothing but CBeebies on the tv to keep the anxiety levels low. Oh, and a good doze of hand washing just to be on the safe side.

In life, we never know what’s around the corner. But we do know our health is the most precious thing we will ever possess. Let’s take this opportunity to protect it as best we can, by showing ourselves some love and attention. Virus or no virus that can only be a good thing!

Namaste.
