When Things Don’t Go To Plan.

I have fond memories from a very young age of my mum singing around the house.

She has a beautiful, lyrical voice and at the top of her hits list, in my younger days, was Que Sera Sera by Doris Day.

A gentle but powerful message that laced its way through my childhood. This week, I’ve found myself humming the tune incessantly.

Possibly as an act of self-soothing for two reasons.
Number one, my mum is away on a Caribbean cruise for two weeks and I’m missing her. Number two, March is here and my expectations for the beginning of 2026 lie tattered on the floor.

No hit YouTube channel.
No doubling of the numbers for my Thursday Virtual Yoga Class.
No daily intake of vitamins.
No running routine… and the list goes on.

But luckily, Doris Day and her wise words unconsciously rose to the surface to settle both me and my ambition down.

“Que sera sera. Whatever will be will be. The future’s not ours to see, que sera sera.”

Of course, setting goals and planning is part of life. It helps us grow and stretch. But sometimes we have to watch out for those pesky, unrealistic expectations.

We have so many roles to play that certain things simply have to wait their turn. Making our peace with this is called Aparigraha in yoga. Sanskrit for non-possessiveness.

Aparigraha invites us to look at how we hold things in our lives. Our belongings, our beliefs, our loved ones and, of course, our expectations. When we cling too tightly, it can be exhausting.

It encourages us to soften our grip and create a little more ease.

So for March, I’m dropping my expectations of how things should be and instead accepting things as they are. It doesn’t mean I won’t one day achieve my goals… but maybe I can do it with a little more “Doris Day” energy.

Whatever will be, will be.

If something hasn’t quite gone to plan so far this year for you, maybe singing a little “Que sera sera” to yourself could invite a little ease and softness helping you loosen your grip on those expectations.

Thank you for being here. Sending love and kindness,
